Weyrling Training Guide: Common Terms and Special
Training
Thanks to Veronica Gueck for making the weyrling
guide!
TERMS:
Class Instructor: The instructor for a class is a rider who was
chosen by the Weyrlingmaster to teach the weyrling class full time.
Although he/she oversees the lessons, and will come to teach the more
important lessons herself, (new drills, first flights, going /between/,
and firestoning) the class instructor will give the other lessons,
exercises, and drills.
DragonSpeech: Dragon speech is when the instructor asks a rider a
question through their dragons. His dragon passes the question to the
weyrling's dragon, and the weyrling's dragon is to pass the question on to
it's rider, who will then send along the answer via the dragons. This
insures clarity of mind-speech, as well as testing to see how well the
weyrling has been paying attention in class!
Dragon-Sight: This goes along with the Dragon-Speech exercise. The
weyrling is blindfolded, and then his dragon is shown an object, and the
weyrling has to describe it using his dragon's sight. They start off with
simple objects, and then move onto more complex objects. Besides ensuring
clarity of mindsight, this exercise helps to teach the basics of
visualization used when going /between/.
Each of the above exercises will be repeated throughout the entire two
turns of weyrling training, but especially in the first few months.
Dragon Toss: Tossing bags of firestone from one weyrling to another.
This will useful in Threadfall, when the weyrlings take the sacks of
firestone up to the riders. This starts with half-loaded sacks of firestone
tossed over a few feet, but eventually the weyrlings will toss fully
loaded sacks from a full dragon-length (approximately forty feet) apart.
Ground drills: Marching in formations used by a fighting wing. This
is done in groups of five, ten, two groups of half the class each, and the
class as a whole. Later, when the dragons start flying, they learn to do
the same drills in mid-air, and then going /between/ If a class does not
get the drills perfect, they will stay after class until they do, no
matter how late.
This is especially important when doing them on the ground, because
mistakes in the air can be fatal.
Ropefalls: Drills done in mid-air to practice ducking and flaming
"threads." Two groups are pitted against each other, and this can get quite
competitive. One group drops ropes soaked in dye on the other group, who
flame and duck it. Each rope that hits a pair equals one negative point,
and each rope that falls to the ground unchecked is two negative points.
After both groups have had a turn fighting the thread, points are tallied
up, and the group with the least points has to do the other groups' chores
in addition to their own.
Weyrling Wing: After a turn and a half of weyrling training, the
weyrlings will join the weyrling wing. The weyrling wing practices the
drills the full riders do. When thread falls, they will fly in the thread,
at the lower level, of course.
Be advised that once you are considered a weyrling of Lakeside you will be
subject to spot inspections of your personal appearance, your dragons
health and appearance and all equipment you as a dragonrider own.
