Weyrling Training Guide: Months 1-3
Thanks to Veronica Gueck for making the weyrling
guide!
MONTH 1: Class instruction involving your dragon. This includes,
but is not limited to, feeding, bathing, oiling, first aid, and dragon
emotions. There will be a quick review of the history of the weyr,
addressing people of status, and making the weyrling knots.
*Sevenday 1: Weyrling etiquette: Includes curfew, explanation of no-
relationships ban, emotional control, behavior towards each other, full
riders, and non-riders. Basic care: What and what not to feed them, bathing
and oiling dragonhide, and how to spot and care for imperfect hide,
constipation and diarrhea. Dragon first aid. Included are: treatment for
scratches, bruises, pulled muscles, constipation, diarrhea. Weyrlings must
spend time bonding with their dragons, focusing on using mind-speech.
*Sevenday 2: Dragon emotions: How to tell dragon and human emotions
apart, how to recognise dragons' emotions, (eye colour) how to deal with
and dampen your dragon's emotions. More bonding time. (specifics on eye
colour is available)
*Sevenday 3: Basic First Aid: How to recognise and treat common
health problems and illnesses, both for dragons and humans. The infirmary
is toured, and healers are brought in to teach classes.
*Sevenday 4: Review: Reviewing both what was learned in the past
three sevendays, as well as what was taught to the Candidates. Make
weyrling knots. Dragon-sight and dragon-speech exercises begin. Spot
inspections of weyrling knots ongoing from this time up until graduation.
MONTH 2: The politics and history of Pern are taught for the
first two sevendays of this month, and physical exercises are started, to
promote strength and endurance. In the second half of the month, weyrlings
are taught the geography of Pern.
*Sevenday 5: Morning: Physical exercises.
Afternoon: History of Pern, including the founding of The Weyr. Politics
between Northern and Southern continent.
*Sevenday 6: Morning: Physical exercises.
Afternoon: A Harper comes in to teach the weyrlings some of the advanced
ballads and teaching songs.
*Sevenday 7: Morning: Physical exercises.
Afternoon: Geography.
*Sevenday 8: Morning: Physical exercises.
Afternoon: Geography.
MONTH 3: This month, weyrlings learn how to bag and sort
firestone, and
practice the firestone toss. Then ground drills (formations on the ground)
start. Weyrlings wake up early, and march in formation all day.
*Sevenday 9: Weyrlings are taught how to select and bag firestone..
At first
it is overseen and checked by the instructor, but as they become proficient
at it, it gradually becomes more of a chore than a lesson.
*Sevenday 10: Dragon toss. A relay of tossing loaded bags of
firestone to
one another. This starts with short distances and half-loaded bags, but
the weight and distance increase until the weyrlings can throw full bags to
one another a full dragon-length apart.
*Sevenday 11: Small groups, with 5 pairs to a group, learning
simple
drills. Each group is led by a "wingleader" a pair who has shown themselves
to be capable, and is switched every week. They must help any slower pairs
and encourage the group. Any group who does not complete the drill to the
weyrlingmaster' (yes, the weyrlingmaster, not instructor, teaches the
drills this month) satisfaction has to repeat it, often staying after
class, until it is perfected.
*Sevenday 12: Larger groups, 10 pairs to a group. Again, all drills
must be
perfect before they are allowed to go back to the barracks. Old drills are
reviewed, and new ones taught.
