Weyrling Training Guide: Months 4-6
Thanks to Veronica Gueck for making the weyrling
guide!
MONTH 4: More ground drills. Month 4 of weyrling training was
just practising the ground drills that the weyrlings have already learned
until they're *absolutely* perfect. And that's it. Month 5 is preparation
for flights, but no actual flying... yet. All in all, it's rather
boring but necessary, and if your weyrlings miss anything here, the
Weyrlingmaster and his assistants won't let them fly next month, so you
don't really want to let that happen.
*Sevenday 13: The weyrling pairs are divided equally into two
groups to practice. Newer, and more complex drills are learned.
*Sevenday 14: The whole weyrling class practices drills in one
group. This practice and learning of new drills will continue in addition
to other lessons until all drills are perfected.
*Sevenday 15: Practice the drills already learned.
*Sevenday 16: Practice, practice, and more practice.
MONTH 5: Classes preparing for first flights: making riding
straps, wing strain, and air currents. Care and repair of riding straps:
Recognizing stretched, rotten, and cracked leather, when and how to patch
and when to scrap the straps and make all new ones.
*Sevenday 17: Basic lessons on air currents and how they affect
flight.
*Sevenday 18: Continued lessons on air currents.
*Sevenday 19: A dragonhealer comes in to talk to the class about
dragon health concerning wingstrain, as well as other injuries to wings.
All weyrlings learn to recognise the symptoms, and how to deal with it.
*Sevenday 20: Instruction on riding straps: how to make and maintain
them. Weyrlings make their first set of riding straps.
MONTH 6: First flights and flying practice.
*Sevenday 21: First flights!! Weyrlings are flown up to a small ledge
separately from their dragons, and then the pair glides down. Each day, the
height of the ledges goes up, so the dragons can practice their landing
skills.
*Sevenday 22: Taking off from the ground.
*Sevenday 23: Flight practice around the Weyr to get used to using the wing muscles.
*Sevenday 24: Further practice. And dragonhealers check each dragon pair
for signs of strain in muscles and the like.
